Winter break
France Chamonix 2006
Although everyone was telling me that skiing is much easier than snowboarding I did not listen. “Snowboarding looks cool and fun and that’s what I am going to try” Soon I realized that was fun only for the ones who had done it before and cool….not really when you keep on falling on your ass. “Stand up!” he was shouting at me like it was the easiest thing in the world to stand up on an icy slope with both feet strap on a board. “I am scared, I can do it, the snow it’s not good today, too icy….my leg is hurting, I bet I got a massive bruise” I am not a very confident person, I always get scared…I do not know why maybe it’s my mum’s fault she is always worry so much about me and my sister and she always thinks the worst….”And what if I fall and break my arm? What if I can’t stop it and crush into a tree or into another person….Oh God I am too scared I should have stayed home” he is waiting for me….he looks fed up…he is probably thinking that I am laying about my leg. “No it’s true you don’t understand my leg is swollen from falling down yesterday” “Stand up…you can do it…open your arms to keep balance…” I am looking around me, I see kids about six years old going down the slope like mad…they don’t look scared they going fast ….they don’t worry about falling down. One of them laughs at me and shouts something in French. Probably: “Are you ever going to move?” Stupid boy… I’ll be ok I just need some lessons. Poor D. he really looks pissed off now waiting for me. Ok I”ll try again…..” Look love I can do it” and it’s true I can do it and I am not too scared and it feels good but after few minutes I fall down again and this time It’s bad , shit my arm hurts, and I am about to cry and I hate it and I am cold and angry so many mixed emotions. “ Well done sweetie that was really good…how is your arm? Can you move it? Good it’s not broken. Come on then stand up” and I do it it again and feels good and scary and fun and it makes me feel so close to you because it’s the first time that we are doing something so exciting together and Although I want to punch in the face you when you keep on shouting at me to stand up, I love you more than ever when I do stand up and we are going down the slope together.
Thank you for waiting for me that day in the icy slope.
p.s Snowboarding rocks!
